Repossession, Renting and Council/Housing Association?

My house is currently being repossessed (although they have not started proceedings yet) however I have started to rent a house but The rent is quite high here so I would ideally like to get onto the council house list/housing association. Where would I come in the list for housing (would they still bump me up the list due to repossession or would they see that I am private renting that I can wait?? I have 2 kids under 4 and a hubby?
