Car Repossession Question?

Might have placed this is the wrong category…Sorry if I did…
Quick question about money…Let’s say I owe $10,000 on a car, and the bank repo’s it…They sell it at auction for $4,000…Do I owe the bank the other $6,000?
I was just curious because I was told this by a friend of mine, but I am not sure if they were correct.
